How to Stop Hiding and Start Showing Up as an Author?

How to Stop Hiding and Start Showing Up as an Author

I have always loved stories—from movies, television shows, and books. It doesn’t matter whether they are fiction or nonfiction. I enjoy hearing personal stories because they are inspiring and showcase the resilience of the human spirit.

One of my favorite authors growing up was Sarah Dessen. She wrote stories about heartbreak, triumph, identity, and resilience. She, along with one of my professors, inspired me to continue writing.

Like many writers, I have had numerous unfinished stories because the ideas didn’t feel quite right. I also explore different creative outlets such as journaling, writing songs, poems, and blogs.

Book.

1. Shift Your Mindset

Many people have incredible stories but are afraid to share them due to perfectionism, fear of failure, or fear of judgment. These are limiting beliefs because they restrict personal growth and potential. To overcome this, you must adopt new perspectives. Instead of focusing on perfection, focus on the impact your book can have on people’s lives. Once you put your work into the world, it will be subject to judgment—but that’s part of the process. The only one judging you is the person who is not progressing in life, therefore they got time to watch , criticize and hope you fail. I don’t believe you fail when you try—I believe you learn lessons that help you succeed.

2. Change Your Identity

Your identity is how you see yourself, and it determines how you show up.

Instead of seeing yourself as an aspiring author, start seeing yourself as an author. Look in the mirror daily and declare: “I am an author.” By doing this, you are no longer waiting for validation—you are claiming your identity.

3. Start Small

It can be intimidating to share your writing, so take small steps. Start by telling a close friend or family member about your book and sharing your work with them. This will help you build the confidence to share with a wider audience.

4. Write Honestly

When you write with honesty and vulnerability, you allow your audience to see the real you. This helps you build connection, trust, and relatability—which can ultimately lead to sales.

A growth mindset is essential in all things. It helps you stay grounded and resilient. Small, consistent actions may seem insignificant, but over time, they lead to massive results.

Action Steps:

  • Read one self-help book that will help you overcome limiting beliefs.

  • Tell your close friends and family that you are writing a book.
